Hi Skip,

I purchased a MASCO MU5 from Kim Wilson that previously had belonged to James Harman.  I watched through the Masco Chronicles and watched some stuff on youtube about the MA-17s and I think I want one too but I'm wondering how different it will be from that little MU5 combo.  Are the guts pretty similar?  I'm not a rich man and don't want to just throw money at tone unless the payoff is going to be worth it.  I have my Sonny Jr and extremely loud raspy mic for my rock band stuff but I'm trying to put together a classic Little Walter/Chicago Blues sound.  Don't know what he uses but, Bharath and his Rythm X seems to have nailed it pretty well. Sure, I know a lot has to do with individual tone from LW but as far as any equipment advice, any would be greatly appreciated.  btw, I know he likely played through a crystal mic, but 'm trying to avoid playing through crystal mics (too fragile for absentmindedness).

Masco MU-5

Hello Taylor-   Thanks for writing.  The circuit in an MU-5 is similar to a Fender tweed Champ. It uses one 6V6 power tube for about 4 watts.  An MA-17 is close to an early tweed Pro or Super.  They use 2-6L6s for about 17 watts....... much more power than an MU-5.   Also, the 17 is able to drive a big cabinet which adds a LOT of oomph to your sound compared to that little ol' 8" speaker in the MU-5.
