learning how to sight read
I noticed that the songs on the site are written for the c harp which makes sense because if the key of the song changes and you follow it with the corresponding harp in second position you would be playing in the correct key for the song (if im not wrong).
I wanted to start incoperating some sight reading practice everyday into my practice schedule (maybe at level 6 becasue I have already planned way too much stuff for level 5). I was hoping you had some advice on this topic or the best way to go about this. thank you.
Hello gamma8gear.
You're exactly correct about key changes.
Do the Level 5 Hole Changes exercise (in Accompaniment Study 5), following the memorization process I speak of (memorizing hole numbers, note names, and scale degrees). Make this part of your daily warmup, really visualizing what you're playing.
Along with that, print out your first study song (Walk with Me) and whiteout the TAB. Figure out the pitches for each note in the first chorus (write them in pencil below the note heads) and sing those note names as you sing the melody. Once you've done that, slowly play the melody on the harmonica. Erase the note names once you achieve 90% accuracy. Do this one chorus at a time.
Once you've done a couple songs that you've already learned in the past, work on some study songs that you haven't yet. From this point forward, always whiteout the TAB and never write the note names or hole numbers down... force yourself to read as you learn the song,
