Hello,

I saw there was another Laney cub10 topic but my problem seems slightly different so I have decided to spawn a new topic.

I am quite inexperienced as it comes to equipment so I would really need some professional help.

My amp started making strange static noices while I play. At first I thought I could do something playing with the knobs in order to reduce it but it seems something is wrong. Can you please help me discover the source?

I am adding a sample video where I very scilently play a single note so that the static noice is clearly audiable. In the video one may also see the current amp settings and the type of Mike I use.

Thanks!

Step one with noise is to

Step one with noise is to unplug the mike. Noise gone? You've got a problem outside the amp like a bad cord. The noise is likely to be from one of two sources. One source is outside the amp, like cell phones, dimmer switches. flourescent lights etc. The other source is the amp itself. Since we can't actually do any work on a new amp like that we need to try some different tubes and hope! Kinda sounds like a preamp tube to me.

Hello Angel. Take a look at

Hello Angel. Take a look at your user manual, it will tell you the tubes in the amp. They will not be the 6V6's (the power tubes). I'll look online as well and will report back.

Looking at this

Looking at this https://manuals.laney.co.uk/Legacy/Cub-10_Manual_ML.pdf they are two 12AX7s. All you need is one to test with. Luckily these are very common tubes.

Thank you so much for your

Thank you so much for your feedback guys!

Finally a "miracle" happened yesterday while I was fiddling with the amp.

I have just unplugged the cable from both the sides (it is a brand new cable), screwed in the connector to the buletini a bit tighted, plugged everything back in and...the noice was suddenly gone. I really hope it stays like that, but for sure I am keeping that manual as sooner or later I may need tube replacements since it is a second hand amp...it has so sweet sound but they dont seem to manifacture these amynore :(

Another question on the topic:

The red light power indicator seems to go off and on randomly while the amp is still on.

That does not seem to affect the quality of the sound, but it makes me wonder.

Is that critical? I mean is that a tube or just a light bulb, that may need replacement?

Old amps use a little bulb

Old amps use a little bulb just like an old flashlight, but I don't know if this amp does or not. The old style ones just need a little cleaning and they'll work.

Looking at that manual that

Looking at that manual that Dave sent I have noticed something I might have overlooked before. This amp has a possibility to be plugged into a PA.

So now my question: Would you guys recommend that I have it miked while on stage or should I speak to the soung guy to plugg it into the PA?

Hello Angel. Mic the amp...

Hello Angel. Mic the amp... this way you get the sound of the cabinet and speaker as well. When an extra mic is not available (this happens often in small jams/performances), the line-out is a good option (this way you only need an instrument cable, instead of a mic, a mic cable, and a boom mic stand).

And it's alive again

It was a preamp tube after all. I have ordered a new one and luckily for me I got it on the first try.

So now it that sweet sound again.

I have had some trouble fitting the new tube though. I could not for some reason piush it all the way into the socket (I was affraid not to break it.

Could that cause an issue?

I may have also streched the metal clamp a bit more in order to be able to put it back in place and now from time to time there is this odd buzzing sound of metal hitting glass because of that lose clamp.

Overall the situation is much better though.

Thanks a million, guys!

I would look VERY carefully

I would look VERY carefully at the socket. Often one of the little "grippers" will get bent and not allow that pin to insert fully.
