Does Kim Wilson have any recordings played acoustically?

Acoustic Kim

One that comes immediately to mind is his cover of SBWII's "Trust My Baby," played acoustically in first position. Kim, like many modern blues harmonica players, varies his harmonica sound in several ways:

-- Using different positions on diatonic (high first position as opposed to low and mid-range second position, minor-sounding third vs. major sounding first and second)

-- Using chromatic occasionally

-- Using low or high-pitched harps

-- Playing acoustically on some numbers even though he plays amplified most of the time.

When you look for acoustic recordings, one thing to check out is to look at the covers of songs made famous by earlier players. Players such as SBWII ("She's My Baby"), Jimmy Reed ("High and Lonesome"), and Slim Harpo generally (but not always) played with an acoustic sound, and covers of their recordings by later players are more likely to be played acoustically because that's part of the perceived identity of those tunes. When a player takes one of those tunes and plays them amplified instead, it can be seen as a daring departure. Kim is a fairly traditional player and will often stick with the overall sound of the original, even while putting his own stamp on the interpretation.

Jimmy Rogers Ludella

Winslow...Thanks, I always get a lot out of your shared perspective.. I recently viewed a video of Kim guesting on a radio station "Live" program where he played 3 tunes using an A harp and playing in 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions; this is a good example of what you are speaking about his varied play.

The Ludella CD, that Kim produced and played harp on with Jimmy Rogers is another must have and essential listening piece; his accompaniment playing is really extraordinary and I would reccomend any harp player to go to the store and add this to their library......Thought???

Yes, Winslow, I said 1st, 2nd and 3rd...I meant 1st, 2nd and 2nd...All in all, as you said, Kim is a very traditional player....

Acoustic Kim

Big Jack Johnson's album The Memphis Barbecue Sessions (feat. Kim Wilson) is full of great acoustic harp by Kim Wilson. Highly recommended.
