David,

In the Improvising study 4 under support material section 2 exercise 1, Why do we have parenthesis around the 1 chord arpeggio notes? Do they represent draws? If so it is not consistant with the other tabbing. Also, is there a typo with the 2 as well? Should it not be the 2 draw?

Thanks for having a look,

528hemi

Answer

Hello 528hemi. I spoke about this in the video lesson. To answer your questions....

The notes in parenthesis for the V7 and IV7 chords are what I called "honorary" chord tones... not part of the basic triad or bluesy flat seventh... they are what's technically known as "upper extension" notes, specifically the 9th and 6th (the 6th more technically known as the 13th). These can be good choices, but have to be used very specifically... the licks I use these in are your specific uses for study.

The I7 Chord I place the non-root notes in parenthesis to denote that ultimate resolution must come in the form of the root of the I7 Chord.
