Hi David

Im trying to get my hands around the improv study.  Just for clarification, while the lick you provide can be played across all 3 of the standard Blues chords, I want to confirm that normally when we come up with a 4 2 or 1 bar lick we would need to transpose those into their respective chords.

I know how to do the transposition using scale degrees.  Can the circle of 5ths be used in any way to do the transposition?  {dont tell me let me guess] Ill bet really senior players like your self can do that transposition mentally or from memory.

Thanks as always

Gary K

Hello Gary. You actually

Hello Gary. You actually don't have to transpose those licks to their respective chords. As I state in the lesson, phrasing can trump chord change. With that said, you will do one chorus where you will transpose the lick to the IV (this is the A B/A C Chorus Form). As you advance through your improvising studies I will reveal more music theory (I don't want to bog down the lessons in the beginning with too much theory, but don't worry, I will go very in-depth with theory as you go through your studies).

In regards to the circle of 5ths. You can use that as a tool (the IV is the previous key in the circle and the V is the the next in the circle). In your Music Theory Study lessons I go into a more intuitive way to do this, using chord scales. Between your Improvising Study lessons and Music Theory Study lessons, I'll give you a lot of tools.

Yes, senior players can transpose in their heads, but it takes a lot of work! Keep at it! :-)

Great learning path

Im continuing to work through the Chorus forms and find the exercise spot on for old bandsmen like me who were never really schooled in imrov or music theory.

I have done some good things with the  AAA and AAB using your example.

I have scotched a lick from the Steve Cohen book which also works well with your Jam Track.  When I thiink about how to put a B turnaround into this using a related structure to the Cohen lick (lick #1) my head runs into a wall.  Somehow I must have to do that transpostion in here in order to get the V, IV, I, V chords.  I realize this is outside the level 5 exercies but can you please give me a direction on this?

Gary

Great, glad to hear. It's a very intuitive way to play (this is why we blues harmonica players use it).

You're correct, you do have to sequence the lick for the B. This will most likely require a lot of articulate bending. You can learn about sequences here https://www.bluesharmonica.com/lessons/music_theory_study_4_melodic_deve...

Hello gwknopp. I recommend

Hello gwknopp. I recommend you use your study songs on the site. Look for fills (licks that are in bars 3, 4, 7, and 8) and licks that are larger that you can experiment with to shorten them. Temperature and Gary's Blues have some great small licks for you to use. Experiment, you'll get it.
