Seems like I can slap a hole, after breathing air through the whole chord, but without giving enough time for the reeds to start vibrating. Or, I can give the whole chord time to sound fully, then slap to the single hole. But, this can be difficult with quick notes. Should I still work on getting the full chord to sound, on every slap?

Answer

Good question. The definition of a slap is a single note that's preceded by a chord. If the line is too fast to hear the slap affect, then don't slap. You may choose to slap only the first note of a run or note combination... this is common. Try the lick below in a triplet rhythm...

4 3 4, 4+ 3+ 4+, 3 2 3

Try:
1) Slapping all the notes
2) Just the first and third of each triplet figure
3) Only the first note of each triplet figure
4) Slapping all the notes, but make the middle note of each triplet figure a pull (this is off subject, but it sounds cool with this lick!)

Found my answere from an earlier forum post

David already answered my question so I post it here so I do not forget the answer. I found it easy to do on high notes first.
''Hey Pete. It's the same technique for the blow as the draw... just as you described it for the draw... no change. If you're having trouble with this, think "spitty"... like you're try to spit something off the tip of your tongue.''

How to slap a 3Blow

I asked how it's done, but now I see I forgot to save after previewing. Bear with me...I'm growing.
