Hello

I bought the Hohner harmonica care kit, but I'm not getting good results so far. On cells that have stopped playing, after cleaning and centering the reeds, I try to get them to play with the gapping. On some, it does, but on others, it doesn't. Specifically, the 6, 7, and 8 draws don't play at all on my 20A Special. I understand it's a trial and error, but I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. Any advice?

Diagnosis

Hello Mon1979

Allow me to establish a baseline for my diagnosis with a few questions:

  1. Is this a new Hohner Special 20/A harmonica?
  2. Is there another Hohner A harmonica that you can compare playability for DRAW notes 6, 7, 8?
  3. You mentioned cleaning and centering the reeds, was there a reason for this?

Diagnosis

It's a new Special 20, about four months old. I also have a Marine Band Deluxe, also in A.

When I opened it to try to figure out why the blown 6 had stopped, I saw it was very dirty. I washed it with water, vinegar, and baking soda. Then I used mild soap and a toothbrush. After that, I applied alcohol. Once it was clean, to practice with the new tools, I started centering and gapping. It's a game of trial and error.

My goal is to learn how to maintain the other harmonicas. I started with all this on December 1st, and I'm very interested. That's why I bought the Honer kit. Aside from the Marine Band, the rest of the harmonicas are all Special 20s.

Why is my harmonica not playing properly?

New harmonica players often wonder, "Is it my skill level preventing the harmonica from sounding good, or is it a poorly made harmonica?" Being able to maintain and repair your instruments will help answer this question and will benefit players, especially those who are new to the harmonica.
