Hi Kinya,

I just bought Godel Melody harmonica and there are few thing I really like about it. I really like to shape of it, if fits nicely into my hand and, as it has full coverage cove plates, it fit also perfectly into my mouth and do not chop my facial hair.

Bad thing is that I prefer sound of Marine Band, which is more bright and chords sounds much better. Is it possible to tune Golden Melody to sounds like Marine Band? Will any custom comb help?

Thanks.

Hello Goran, Ah ha, Hohner

Hello Goran,

Ah ha, Hohner Golden Melody, the "Jelly Bean" shaped harmonica--is still the go to harmonica for Carlos del Junco.

The two things that help create the Marine Band voicing:

  1. Compromised Just Tuning
  2. Vented cover plates

So the answer is Yes--with some surgerical harp smithin', it is possible to fabricate vents into the GM cover plates and retune the 12 tone equal temperament tuning to compromised just ... but, before we dig in, please answer the following (I don't want anybody to accuse me of driving our members insane ;o)

Q1: have you ever tuned a harmonica?

Q2: are you skillful with handling jeweler's tools, such as rotary, files, hammer.

Hi Kinya,heh I never tuned

Hi Kinya,

heh I never tuned harmonica, and for sure I cannot do it properly first time. But I have experience with fine mechanics tools as I did some antique camera repairs in past.

Honestly, I do not know if I would do it by my own, depends if there is anyone in UK doing that and how much he/she ask for tuning. :)

I can make vents on the side without problem.

Thanks

Start with the vent project

Start with the vent project first Goran. That will make a significant change in the GM voicing. Then review our video on harmonica tuning--for the future.
