Howsit Skip, i got a 1951 gibson br6(F) a couple of weeks ago and its been running great. The other day i pluged it in to a surge protector and it didnt turn on. So i pluged it in strait to the outlet and it came on, but there was a werid sound when turned on, it sounds like a high frequency squeal, whine sound that peaks then fades out. Kind of like a old tube tv when turned on. It comes on gradually then disappears, only lasts a couple of seconds then the amp works fine. Im going to take it to a amp tech when i get time. I tried it today and made the same sound. Should i wait till the tech looks at it before i play it again. Do you think something got damaged from the outlet, it has a 2 prong plug ,the plug is like a vampire conection to the cord , i was gonna get that replaced.Other than that it sounds great. Everything is original and only 2 caps were replaced, previous owner said he had a tech do the caps. Hope that all made sense thanks.

Gibson BR-6

Hello Brian- Thanks for writing and welcome to BH.com!

Well, you are one lucky dude to have picked up an old Gibson like that. It is a very good harp amp for everything but large gigs. Everyone knows that I like to keep amps as original as possible, but old Gibsons always need extra attention, especially when compared to a Fender amp from the sixties or seventies. I would strongly suggest getting it into the hands of someone who has repaired at least a few old Gibsons before playing it any more. I little bit of time and money and spent now should provide you with a very nice old amp that you can enjoy for a lifetime. Good score!
