Hi David,

Gary's Blues is a lot of fun to work on and I really enjoy the technical and cool licks. At first its really tough but luckily, as you state over and over, it gets easier.

After a month working at it, mostly playing with the Mp3, I felt it's time to dial in more of the tecniques and work with the Mp3 and the score a lot more. My question I have been pondering for a while now is in Chorus 4, first measure, on the second beat is a noted G. I have a really hard time hearing that on the Mp3 and realized I have been playing the B (3draw) here, or sometimes missing the note altogether and focusing on getting the pull ryhthmically. This sounds fine to me but I searched and listened to Ryan Walker playing this song (multiple times and places) and I can really hear his movement to the G which I like and it adds to the passage.

Am I not hearing it on the Mp3 or is it just really subtle do to the rythimic nature of the 'Flat Tire'?

And now Ive created a focus for my practice it seems. Here is a spot to apply learning and dialing in this lick in chorus forms I think.

John

Answer

Hello jgwilks. I'm glad you're enjoying the tune, I steal licks from it regularly myself! Yes, that lick is a great one for Chorus Form practice.

I do play that 2 Draw G very softly, it's part of my dynamics for that phrase, though you don't have to play it that way... if you like it played more pronounced, play it louder.

Challenge

I have to add that chorus 4 and 5 are a challenge. There is quite a bit of technique happening to get down.
