I enjoyed you new video on Garageband. I have been using it, just as you described. I would like to go up a level in sound quality and would like your advice on using a digital interface (such as M-Audio makes) to plug my bass guitar or harp into.

Does this work well? Do you hear the harp play thru headphones that are plugged into the interface? What model of interface would you recommend?

Thank you,
Al

Answer

Yes, using this gives you more input options and more control on input levels. I use the M-Box Pro... all the M-Boxes are nice (the more you spend the more simultaneous inputs you can use... this is for when you're recording more than one person at a time). Also check out the Roland UA-1G USB Audio Interface.

Yes, you'll hear the harp and other instrument as you record if you wish (you can mute any instrument and adjust volume as desired).

Garageband alternatives

Dave, for those of us who haven't jumped on the Steve Jobs flying saucer, what programs would you recommend for Windows users?

Also, computer audio interfaces and recording systems are a new area for me (I use PCs for stupid things like spreadsheets and email). Can you recommend a good site or book to learn the ins-and-outs of PC studio recording?

Answer

Music Creator 5 is good. I use a PC for all of my recording... I personally use Pro Tools LE. Music Creator 5 is MUCH cheaper. Lynda.com is great... I used them to polish my Pro Tools skills. They tend to focus on industry standard programs, so you may not see the lower cost recording programs... you might. I have not used any generic recording books... it's always been focused on the programs I am intending on learning.
