Hi Dave,

I am having a real problem getting the 3 draw on the G harmonica to sound any good - bending is almost impossible. I even bought a new one thinking there was a problem with the harp itself, but obviously the problem is with me as the new one was no better. Any advice?

Answer

Hello Wendy. The tongue is responsible for all good and evil on the harmonica. In this case, your tongue is humped in the middle-back of the mouth, causing your oral cavity to be tuned to a pitch that is offending the natural vibration of the 3 draw reed. Get in front of mirror... close your eyes... drop your tongue... confirm that it's dropped... open your eyes... most students are surprised to see that their tongue is way humped up in the back... this is where the focus is... to get the back of that tongue down. A yawn is a good position to help. Also check my video in the FAQ section on sounding the 2 draw... it's the same issue. Best wishes on this... it's annoying, but you'll get it with practice, patience and time.
