While it may have been a long time since you have been in this situation, I'm sure at some point you were there. I will be going to Memphis to compete in the IBC in February and do a showcase for Betsie Brown, the noted publicist. Frankly, I feel like I am stepping in way over my head. While my band has gotten some really good reviews and I have had positive comments from reviewers, I am having a hard time getting a good frame of mind - the one that says "play what you play". Do you have any suggestions for getting the head in the right place and calming the nerves?

Answer

The critical mind is important in the practice room, but has no business on the bandstand. Walk in the door with confidence and do your thing. You're playing music... it doesn't matter how technical it is... it's music, not a schematic. Even if what we play is sloppy, if it's played with conviction and passion, it was played right. Go and enjoy playing music for everyone.

P.S., good luck and have a great time!

David, thank you so much! I am going get your words on an index card and read it every time I start to do the "critical mind thing" before a gig. I am going to add Rod Piazza's quote, "People listen with their eyes" , to remind me to present myself positively.
