Dave, a few weeks back you made a comment on the Fritz Hasenpusch forum that Hohner had recently changed their mic elements. Fritz hasn't responded to any of the inquiries on that forum, so I wanted to follow up with you.

Can you expand on the change? Can you also offer an opinion as to the quality and sound of the new elements?

Answer

Not sure why Fritz is not writing... sent him emails... he must be out of town for a bit. I'll give him a call when I get back from Japan next week. The new elements are not as good as the old... I recommend that mic for more of something for someone to start with ($) and then upgrade the element later. I send students to http://www.fatbottom-mics.com/ for elements. You can get the classic JT30 crystal or ceramic (both sound similar.... ceramic being more hardy... the crystal being what the Blues Blaster used to have) or the Shure CM or CR elements (I use the Shure CR elements in most my mics).

Thanks Dave

Fritz did post up something today. Your emails must have jogged his memory.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'm blowing on a new Hohner crystal (it's one of the Japanese, smaller-diameter ones), even though I bought the mic around 5 years ago. It must have been right when they switched over. I thought by your comment that they switched to something else more recently. I'm using the mic to practice, but I'll definitely be looking to upgrade the element somewhere down the road.

Sorry, 5 years ago I guess is not that very recent!... most everything I work with (equipment, music, etc.) tends to to 50-60 years old, so that's recent to me! ;-)
