I need some help learning the flutter tongue.  I mean, it's not at all hard to do from a technical point of view, but it sounds pretty clunky when I do it.  I think that might have to do with the rhythm (or lack thereof).  I'm wondering whether, when in the learning phase, I should try to pace it along a certain rhythm, like say triplets.  I know that you don't think about that when you're a confirmed player, but maybe at this stage it's a good idea.  What do you think?  Also, do you tend to speed up the movement as you reach the end of the beat?

Thank you

Sure, the triplet rhythm is a good one to shoot for. After it becomes fluid, speed it up sightly so that it's not locked to a specific rhythm. The flutter ussualy stays at a consistent speed, though you could change it for dramatic effect.

The flutter tongue is one of those fantastic techniques that I'd never noticed until I learned it from you.  One more little question:  when I have a long flutter, like those dotted-half-note 5-hole draw flutters you give us, should I first mark a clear slapped F that lasts a teensy tiny bit before I start fluttering, or should I hit the ground running?  I know you probably don't think of it that way, but for my own work it would help to know.

It's no doubt a great technique, glad you like it… I sure use it a lot.

To answer your question.

Hit the ground running… no pause.
