Right up front - I have never attempted or learned about gapping, tuning, replacing reeds, etc. I can open and clean a harp but that's about it. My question is this - When a draw reed (for me so far it's always a draw reed) goes flat a half step or so my action plan has been to either throw the harp away and order a new one or when possible, order replacement reed plates. Can a skilled/trained person fix a flat reed? Is this something I should be learning and if so how would you recommend I go about this. Thanks!

Harp Tech Study

Hello Ihobdey, welcome aboard! You are not alone.

Before you go under the hood--I strongly recommend you view all seven Harp Tech Study videos. The experience will be similar to attending one of our hands-on workshop.

I'm afraid these video can be a tad challenging to find on your own, so let me be your GPS:

  1. Go to the top of your screen and select EQUIPMENT
  2. Scroll past Mics, Amps, Effects Pedal, etc, to the very last section; HARMONICA
  3. Here you will find seven separate Harp Tech Studies, each focusing on specific techniques, such as Tuning, Reed Replacement, Reed Profiling, etc.
  • Harp Tech Study #1, "Getting to Know Your Harmonica"
  • Harp Tech Study #2, "Maintenance and Tools"
  • Harp Tech Study #3, "Tuning"
  • Harp Tech Study #4, "Reed Gapping"
  • Harp Tech Study #5, "Reed Replacement"
  • Harp Tech Study #6, "Reed Slot Sizing"
  • Harp Tech Study #7, "Sjoberg Harp Tuner"
