Hi David...I am working through accompaniment level 3. I would like to get your thoughts about using the flat 7th in accompaniment. Are there times when the flat 7th could be used in place of the root, 3rd or 5th? I have experimented with the flat 7th, and it sounds rather discordant. Would it sound better if the guitar player were playing a 7th chord, for instance?

Thanks in advance.

Homer.

Answer

Yes, you are exactly correct on how one of the other musicians also playing the Flat-7th makes a big difference. See last week's Tip of the Day, this actually was my topic for the entire week... much more details there.
