Hi Skip,

I bought a Fender Deluxe a couple of years ago and I have it paired with a Green Bullet 520Dx. I can't get the volume up to 2 in the "More Drive" setting before it feeds back. I feel that I just can't get the best out of the amp at that level.

I have read that a tube exchange would do the trick. Would you recommend that I go that route or just sell the amp and get something a little smaller and more appropriate for the harmonica. I have seen David praise the Super Champ XD, perhaps the Blues Junior.

Your insight would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Mike

Dealing with a high gain amp

Hello Mike- Thanks for writing. Well, I would say that although your amp is not especially suited for harp, it would be worth it to try a few things before getting a different amp.

1) Forget about using the "more drive" settings. I know that you want a crunchy tone, but start with amp controls on the cleanest setting.

2) Experiment with the tone controls, twist those babies all the way.

3) If that amp has a #2 input, try it.

4) You will find loads of tips here at Dave's site on the topic of lower-gain substitutes for 12AX7 tubes. Putting a 12AU7 or two in that amp will make a world of difference by allowing you to turn the volume up with less feedback. Check it out and let our readers know!
