I am going to purchase an inexpensive Fender amp for practice at home. Either the Champion 20, for $99.00, or the Mustang I V.2 for $119.00. Which would you buy and Why? I will pair the amp with a Shure mic. Thanks for the help!

The fender champion have a distinct sound for the harmonica. Its a good amp to have.

Another good choice would be the fender excelsior.

Any cheap 5-watt tube amp will give you the blues harmonica sound.

I would not recommend the mustang. It dont seem very harp friendly, and all the electronic bell and whisle wont help you get a good sound.

Check out David videos on mics. The new ones are not real good.

I always prefered vintage equipement. My first mic was a 585SA I paid 30$ on ebay. My first amp was the kalamazoo model 2.

thanks for the input

Thank you for your input macnoland. You have helped me decide on the Champ. I will take a look at the excelsior first. I wondered about all the do-dads on the Mustang. Simple is best I guess!

au contraire...

i havent used those amps, but i recall a discussion about SS modelling amps with a lot of harp players a year or two ago. The mustang series was generally lauded as a good thing.  the preamp voice chips are similiar to those in the XD hybrids.  most if not all who had used them recommended as a good choice if going SS
