Hello Skip,

I have a 53 Gibson GA-20 with a tube lineup 5y3gt 6v6gt 6v6gt  6sl7 6sj7 6sj7. I'm looking to get some more room before feed back. Those dials don't turn far at all before feedback. Would you suggest changing out to a lower gain tube and if so which one or using a device like an attenuator to lower the signal from the microphone?

Thanks Skip!

Feedback control

Hello Mark-  Thanks for writing. The only tube in your GA-20 that can be "subbed" is the 6SL7.  You can use a 6SN7 in it's place and it may help with your feedback issue.

That said, the GA-20 is a very good harp amp with no mods at all.  Yes, feedback is an issue but I think technique (plus a volume control on the mic) will help more than modifying the amp.   One of those cool Kinder boxes would certainly reduce feedback, but you can forget attenuators- they kill tone.

Or just stand further away from the amp!
