I'm trying to figure out how to play Evan's Shuffle at the moment (much harder than I thought! I've given up trying to transcribe it - instead, I've slowed it down and chopped it into a series of mp3 files, a phrase-chain at a time). What I'd like to know is how do you figure out when someone's playing the 2 draw or the 3 blow? I can sometimes figure out when it would be too awkward to play the 2 draw in a particular lick, but I can't tell from sound alone. Second, do you have a transcript of the tune in any of your books - I want to check I'm not inventing my own incorrect version!

You're going about it the right away... listen and experiment... even I don't know when they're doing it 100% of the time. Drop me an email about the transcription and we can discuss it.

I'm working on that one, too!

Great tune.
But it has more notes in it every time I listen!
Great bending practice.

David, what is a simple (?) program for transcribing? And what do you use? (I know you've posted this info before, but I can't remember where). I've decided that since I have CRS syndrome, I'd like to transcribe some tunes to "drive them home" as well as to give myself a future reference.

Transcribing is a WONDERFUL learning tool... I highly recommend it and it's actually part of the lessons for my advanced students. I use Finale, but it's expensive... they have many versions of the software though, starting from free to ~$200 (the full version is ~$800). Take a look at http://www.makemusic.com/. What the lower versions won't have is some of the fancy note head changes (like what I use for pulls and such), but the notes are there and the hole numbers are simply lyrics... very easy to use.

Good luck and have fun with it... it will take FOREVER the first time, but at each pass at it you'll get faster. This is a GREAT practice to develop your ear. When you play a lick, any speed and with any technique I can tell you exactly what you played, note for note, technique for technique... and that skill comes from doing a lot of transcribing.

A side note... figuring out the hole numbers is the easy part, it's figuring out the rhythms that's tough!

Finale

I was wondering where you got those special note characters. I have Finale Print Music, and I've been wracking my brain trying to find those characters. I guess I have to upgrade to the full version.
