Greg,

I have an ElectroVoice EV 920 Spherex mic.  It sounds great.  Looks cool too.  I'd like to put the element in a JT-30 shell because that's what I'm comfortable holding.  But I'm not sure how to get the element out without destroying the EV grill.  Any tips?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi, SteveA strong Brush

Hi, SteveA strong Brush Crystal from an EV920 Spherex is one of my all time favorite elements. You don't have to destroy the grill but you do have to deform it. It is simply held in place by being a little larger in diameter than the solid base's lip - so its spring pressure plus friction is what holds it in place. I used to try to save them - and you can - by gently squeezing/prying until it is free. Then I realized I really didn't need to keep the screen all that perfect - you CAN bend it back to shape - and got more aggressive by just really pushing in with my thumb until it bends inward. Then it is easy to get out.

Cheers and good luck! /Greg
