Hello David,  I hope everything is going well. Finally put some time into ear training lessons.

Listening to  "All the Love in the World"  I at first identified as Dm until a used E's and B's.  Not minor.   Then I  improvised with the G Blues Scale.  Not bad.   I then improvised with the Majar Pentatonic Scale .  Obviously, it is in the key of D( Harp G 2nd position). Since the song sounds bluesy to me, I choose the blues scale.  Am I using the correct logic?

Ear Training

Thanks Dave.  Another question.  The song that gave me the most difficulty in Lessoon 1 was "Mistakes From The Past".  I used the C Harp tech but could not definitively determine the Key.  At first I thought C then E, then G then A.  Then I started to feel tone deaf.  When using the various harps I settled on A and confirmed it on the Cheat sheet.  I think my confusion was based on it being minor and also based on the A scale, C was the flat 3rd, E was the fifth, F was the flat 6th and G was the flat 7 th.  Therefore to an EAR IN TRAINING they all kind of matched at times.  Is my resoning correct?  If I was on the bandstand the entire set would be over, intermission, the second half and the band would have gone home for the night before I determined the key  to this song.

That's why we practice James.

That's why we practice James. Luckily it's not too common for the band leader to leave us out of the key discussion. This is more about you figuring out a tune in your collection. You went through the right process, and ultimately got it... well done. This IS the process... keep it up.
