Watching videos on youtube, I often see players such as Junior Wells, SB2, among others, put their finger briefly in the their ear while playing. Maybe it's just tugging the earlobe. I don't know. I was wondering if you knew anything about this.

When I do it

When I do this it is so I can hear the harp.

Me Too!!

Like Dave said - same for me. Especially when I'm finding the key - band has started and key of song not announced. I pull out the C harp, finger in ear and find the key. Without the ear 'plug' impossible to hear myself!

Starting note

For me it's like that too. Even though there are standard keys we play our songs in, sometimes there may be an instrument swap and the 'new' bass player may choose a different key than I'd discussed with the regular bass player for instance. Another time it happens is when I want to be sure I am gonna come in on the right note; usually not an issue, but we have 1 song in particular where I use a F harp and come in on the beat in unison with the keys, on 6 blow. I want to be sure I am cleanly on the note to start the riff because it sounds really bad if it's anything else than clean and tight. Once the song starts there's no way I can privately hear that note on an F harp apart from "head resonance"
