Hello Alan. The harmonica was

Hello Alan. The harmonica was built to be a simple instrument, to play in one key only (seven notes of the possible 12). Harmonica players have learned to play in up to three keys (C Harmonica in C is called 1st Position... go up five scale degrees... C Harmonica in G is called 2nd Position... go up five scale degrees... C Harmonica in D is called Third Position).

The chromatic harmonica was then designed (Hohner released theirs in 1912 if I remember correctly) to play in all keys. If you desire to play in all keys, then exploring the chromatic harmonica is a good idea. With the technique of bending and overbending you can access all twelve notes/keys on the diatonic harmonica as well, but with the chromatic harmonica it doesn't require these challenging techniques (that are cool, but take many years to master).
