Kinya, loads of harp troubles this week.  Here's the latest...

On my Sedel 1847 D harp, I seem to be having some strange problems with the 3 draw reed, especially when starting from a bend -- and most notably when combining a little 4 draw with it.  On fast passages, it seems to "stick", not sounding for a moment, then all of the sudden kicking in.  I wondered if it might be technique, but I don't seem to have the problem when playing the same licks with my Special 20 or Crossover D harps.

Is the reed too "stiff"?  Is it me?  The Seydel definitely has a bit of a wider hole spacing, and of course the stainless reeds, so I wonder if the difference in embouchure has anything to do with it.

If it's the reed, what can I do to "loosen" it up?

Signed,

Frustrated in North Carolina

I am suspicious of the 3

I am suspicious of the 3 BLOW reed. Your mission is to increase the gap.

  1. Remove the cover plates
  2. With a wooden toothpick (or cuticle stick used in manicures), apply downward "sliding" pressure on the backside of the reed--from rivet end to free end.
  3. When you reach the free end, of course the reed will dip into the slot. Allow this to happen. In fact, you can "bounce" the reed up/down a bit.
  4. Play the same lick that had the reed take the "stutter step".
  5. If the problem has been remedied, STOP, and throw down another shot of your favorite Tequila. It is important to reward yourself for these little victories ;o)
  6. If not, but improved; repeat the procedure ...

Let us know how this works out for you.

Bourbon is my celebration

Bourbon is my celebration drink of choice. Problem is, with each celebration, the screws keep getting crooked. Come to think of it, I've had that problem with bourbon when NOT working on my harps...

Thanks again, Kinya, for the great advise!
