Hi

I just discovered the scale degree chart for cross harp...you know...4 6 1 4 6 1 4 6 1 4 for the blow holes and

5 1 3 5 7b 2 3 5 7b 2 for the draw holes.  This seems a whole lot more useful to me playing cross harp than the 1 3 5 1 3 5

chart.  Can you explain why you encourage memorization of the straight harp chart over the cross harp one?

Thanks!

Harpo Mark

Hello Harpo Mark. In the

Hello Harpo Mark.

In the music theory studies you'll see the First Position version shown first, since the instrument was built to be played that way. As you continue your studies you'll see the Second Position version shown.

I prefer using pitches, this is why you fill in the pitches on your note chart worksheets many, many times in the music theory lessons. This way you only need to use one chart, instead of a scale degree chart for each chord (I, IV and V).
