hi skip,i bought a new crate 5 watt tube amp (v series) about a year ago i hardly ever used it ,it never sounded too good, either with my sure 57 or bluesblaster,(new) it sounded thin, no bark or volume,a buddy plugged his guitar into it recently,he seemed to think it was a bad tube or tubes, 27 dollars buys new tubes ,do you think i should change them for a fix,? and if so can i make it more harp freindly with diff tubes?,

thanks ,bill

Crate 5 watt

Hi Bill- Hopefully, BH readers can help me out a little on this one..... I really have no idea if that model amp is especially thin or bright-sounding, although I'm sure that it wasn't intended to be used as a harp amp.

The real question sounds to me like "is my amp working properly, and if not, should I buy new tubes?" I'd say it's worth a try for $27.

How about going down to Guitar Center and trying out another identical amp? That's probably my best idea......

Also, subbing that 12AX7 tube with a lower-gain substitute WILL lower the gain of the amp, but I'm not certain you would like the sound better.

Your thoughts, BH readers?
