I hear this really really cool sound from a lot of harmonica players.  The sound is really hard to explain, but as I've studied pulls and slaps more that its gotta be related.  Rather than try to explain the sound and guess at what it is I found an example of it.

In submission #7 of Gary Smith at around 3:49 - 3:50.  Its this like extended slap maybe, but it feel like its the opposite in or out of the single note you resolve to ...

I hear this sound in a bunch of places in your lessons and other players, I can't quite seem to duplicate it.  Any tips as to what is making that sound??

Hello jkendall. At 3:49 to

Hello jkendall. At 3:49 to 3:50 on the video titled "Submission #7 Part 1: Masking the Harp: Holes 1-2" I use slaps on the downbeat (2 draw) and pulls on the upbeat (1 and 2 draw together). So you get 2-slap, Pull, 2-slap, Pull, etc. You'll learn this in Tongue Block Study 3.

Thanks for the speedy

Thanks for the speedy reply.

Okay so I didn't realize that the submission was broken into parts.  The sound I'm talking about is in Submission #7 Part 2: Masking the Harp: Holes 1-3.  Same time frame, only let me be a little more specific.  I'm refering to the sound that happens bettween 3:49 and 3:50.  Don't get me wrong the riff you're playing sounds really cool, but its the very begining of that riff that I'm talking about.

Thank you jkendall, it always

Thank you jkendall, it always help me out when students are real specific. I'm exhaling through the harmonica. Just a light exhale with my tongue off the harmonica to get rid of air. You can choose to open your lips and not allow air to go through the harmonica (not sounding the chord) or keeping your lips on the harmonica to sound the chord.

This is one of those things

This is one of those things that I just can't quite get to sound 'correct' to my own ears.  Hopefully its something that I settle into as I gain some patina :).

Thanks for your speedy answer.

This is something that will

This is something that will develop naturally, I wouldn't seek to practice it.
