Dave, how much do you know about the Avid/DigiDesign stuff?

In particular, does the M-Audio hardware work with Pro Tools LE, or do you need the DigiDesign Mbox hardware for that?

If making an investment, do you have to pick one up front (Pro Tools LE/Mbox or M-Powered/M-Audio), or can you mix and match?

Trying to find this info on their website is like putting a twist drill through my forehead.

Answer

I purchased it as a package... the M-Box came with the Pro Tools LE.

Dave, can you give me a mini review?

I'm very seriously considering buying the Pro Tools suite. It's not really as much for me as it is for my children. My 16-year-old son has been studying keyboards and is moving at an amazing rate. He is also a bit of a computer wiz and has shown a keen interest in MIDI programming work. When I showed him the Pro Tools package, he really got excited. His twin sister is learning guitar, and with all of the musicians in the house (my 5-year-old is even blowing on a Pocket Pal now), it might be kind of fun to play with recording (nightmares of a new Partridge Family?).

A brief review of Pro Tools from a regular user would be very helpful. What are the things you like about Pro Tools? What are the things you don't like? How many stars would you rate it (or big toes)?

Before plunking down $700 or more, I like to learn as much as possible ahead of time.

Thanks!

This is the industry standard for recording... it's what all the pro's use. It's also very intuitive, though for someone new it will take some time of course. When setting everything up on your computer expect to spend some time on tech support with them, I had to every time I had to set up a new computer. The computer it's used on should also have a good amount of memory and ram to allow it to run smoothly. I highly recommend you (and your family! ;-) go through the tutorials at Lynda.com.

Thanks David

Your tech support comment made me shiver. How are they to work with?
