Hi David,

I'm working through William Clarke's version of The Work Song on chromatic from one of your transcription books. I noticed that things like 7+/2+ and 9/4 "octaves" are occasionally notated. Why would one do these 4 hole blocked ocataves? I know 2 holes blocked creates that dissonant fake octave, but what's the purpose of the giant ones?

Glad you asked! Those are typos... I did those transcriptions when I was 22... my proofreading skills were not as developed back then :-)

Oh. No worries. All those

Oh. No worries. All those transcriptions are great compared to other transcriptionists work. Plus it's good practice training my ears and making corrections. I just wasn't sure. So GHS was more of a full octave player and L Walter was more of a fake octave player from what I gather. Do you think Clarke played more full octaves or fake octaves in general?

Answer

Little Walter only used fake-octaves... I've never heard him play an octave (maybe he as, but I'm not aware of it). George Smith used both. William Clarke and Rod Piazza use both as well, but more octaves than fake due to how powerful they sound.

P.S., when you see something you're not sure is a typo, look at the music notation... that's usually correct.
