Hello All,

I probably can't see the forest for the trees here.

I am looking for some "chugging" ideas; as in the "I am a man" lick-sort of thing, where the lick is played and then a "response" is made.

I would like to have a few of these ideas in mind so that I can use them for practicing when I am out and about with my harmonica in my pocket.

I don't have much of a repertoire of licks at this point, but it seems like a good way to acquire some. It is much appreciated.

Hank

Chugging or call-and-response

Chugging usually means fast repeated rhythms, as in train imitations.

But from your description it sounds like you're after call-and-response riffs, which are quite different. They're usally three or four notes that play after a line from the singer or sometimes another instrument. You're already aware of the I'm a Man riff.

Turn it backwards and you've got the Hoochie Koochie Man riff in first position:

   2D 3Db 2D 3Db 4B

Put it in second position and it plays like this:

    1D 2Dbb 1D 2Dbb 2D!

The Help Me riff can be used as a response riff:

     2D 3B 2D 3Db 4B (same notes as the first-position Hoochie Koochie riff, just a different sequence)

Then there's the Mojo Work' riff (James Cotton and all subsequent players version) in second positon:

2D 2D 2D 2Dbb 1D

There are more, but this is a good start.
