David Hi. Today I blew two 5 draw reeds, one on the Low F and the other on the Bb. Both as you know are harps needed for LoA7. They have done a lot of miles over the last seven months. So whilst I wait for replacement plates I am working on my Chromatic study. I am finding the lesson 4 a challenge with octaves. Just cant seem to get my reference point as to what an octave should sound like on the chromatic in spite of listening to your video lesson and examples. Would you mind if I sent you a recording of the second chorus of the study song. It is a bit ropey but I need some reference/base to work with. BTW I have been at it for about a week so I have put in some effort.

Thanks

Hello John. Sure, send me a recording. A good example will be you playing the 2+/5+ on the diatonic, and then the 2/5 draw. The 2/5 is not an octave (chordal) and the 2+/5+ is.

Thank you

David thank you. I will persist with trying to get a handle on it. No pain no gain. Yes the 2+. 5+ is an option for me to work with and I will see how I go. Thanks.

Great lick

David I am making very good progress with the octaves and into chorus 4 and just wanted to say what a fantastic lick with the lead into and the v and vi in bars 9 and 10.  (no reply required)

Thank John, I’m glad you like

Thank John, I’m glad you like it. One more tip... use painter’s tape (will leave no residue) and tape off the faceplate. Poke a hole in the holes you’re meaning to play (holes 1 and 5 for example) to hear exactly what it’s supposed to sound like. Pull off the tape and match the sound.

Ha yes

David yes thanks that is exactly what I did. I found I was wide enough but not blocking all three holes so had to learn to position my tongue. A very good idea, thanks.

Got it

David with your help I am now very comfortable with my chromatic octaves, they sound great and I'm well into chorus 5 of So Blue for you. There was a time I doubted I would get it but as you so often say "you will achieve it it's just a matter of when". Great tuition. Thank you.
