One chromatic study is labelled as beginning, several are intermediate, and one is advanced. As I'm considering adding chromatic to my daily LOA studies I'm wondering how to interpret those labels. Does beginning mean for a relative beginner, say just beginning LOA 5, or does it mean it's the first step for a player who's a solid diatonic player. I can probably take a pretty good guess at the answer but when I see 3rd position Study 2 not appearing until LOA 8 I'm a bit concerned I might be trying too hard?

Answer

Blues chromatic is easier to play than the diatonic... for the main reason that there's no bending. Study 1 a player with around three months experience could take a shot at. If you want to match it with your diatonic lessons, your clue is to look at the techniques used in each song. Chro Study 2 uses pulls, so that would place it around the area of Tongue Block Study 3 ("Gary's Blues"), which is LOA-L4. You CAN study all the levels of chromatic without studying any other material on the site, just the techniques taught in that chromatic lesson. So dig in with what practice time you have and keep rolling.
