Say you have an "AAA" chorus form, but you tweak the second line to make it sound better (for example, playing Bb instead of B, but everything else the same).  Would this be clasified as "AAA" still, or "A A1 A", or "ABA", or something else?

Hello bbrown1234. Good

Hello bbrown1234. Good question.

If you change the B to Bb to match the IV7 Chord, then I call it A B/A C... with the B being the slight change. I know it's a slight change from the A, but the change is being asked for by the IV7 Chord, making it B in the way I like to think. If you were to change the texture (two-note textures or shakes, instead of single notes) or add/delete notes, then I would label it as A1... that is if it's still in your mind, and execution, a I7 idea.

In the end, you can call it what you want... this system is a way to think about your phrasing and analize other players' music.

Makes sense, thanks.

So you'd go ahead and call the third line "C" even though it is the same as the first?

Oh, sorry. If you change to B

Oh, sorry. If you change to B in bar 5, it would be rare to go back to A in bars 9-12. If you do, then it would be A B/A A. Again, rare though.
