Hi David,

I just recently purchased the History of the Blues Harmonica album ( I know...what took me so long right?) and I have to say it is a fantastic listen. As I write this I have Walter's Boogie playing in the background.

As far as I know (I maybe incorrect) Junior Wells was predominantly a lip purser when he played, except for octave splitting and so forth, but when you played Chitlin Con Carne on the album did you tongue block or lip purse? My guess is tongue block, but either way it sounds wonderful! :) Just curious.

Thanks

Answer

Glad you like the CD. I agree with you... that's what I hear from him as well. I tongue blocked almost all of it... changing sometimes to pucker for some articulations and especially that "oodle adle adle" phrased on the V Chord. I thought about puckering all of it, as I have in the past for some Butterfield stuff, but decided just to stay in TB... personal preference I guess.

It still sounds wonderful

It still sounds wonderful tongue blocked. I guessed he lip pursed for the articulations but also some of the notes are more trebley than you would expect from a tongue blocked style. Thanks for the answer David, Much appreciated. Many of the tracks in that album are going to find their way into my copy of the Amazing Slow Downer for further study! ;)
