G'day,
this has been bugging me for a while. I have a book of harmonica transcriptions called "blues harmonica collection" by David McKelvy. I haven't used it much. i have been told its not bad

i took a look at the transcription for "Checkin up on my baby", which the author attributes to Sonny Boy williamson.
its not any version i recognise. i have only ever found 1 recording of the song by SBW2, but i know its been done by others, including Jr Wells.

its no big deal to me in terms of playing the song, but its just bugging me. i'd really like to know what this is a transcription of. does anyone here know?

Checkin' Up On My Baby

The blues harmonica collection by David McKelvy is a great harp book, was working on Sonny Boy's Help Me and Honest I Do by Jimmy Reed all today.

Had a look at "Checkin' Up On My Baby" on my iTunes list, found two from Sonny Boy Williamson ll.

01. Sonny Boy Williamson ll - THE CHESS YEARS [Disc 2] (1.59)

02. Sonny Boy Williamson ll - THE CHESS YEARS [Disc 4] (2.37)

and two more from

03. Checkin' Up On My Baby - Peter Madcat Ruth - Live In Rio (4.02)

04. Checkin' Up On My Baby - Mikey Jr. - The 420 Sessions (2.57)

Hi Troy, that SBWii track which is 1.59 long is the only 1 i have ever heard, and it is not what is transcribed in the book. maybe the other one? i have never heard of a second SBW2 version...but i looked on the itunes store and couldnt see that album, though i found a few free downloads of it...

i guess the second one could be it, given its a bit longer. more words in the book version than on the sbw2 record i have...there are about 40 versions on the australian itunes store...but only 1 by sbw2. i'll hunt around for that chess years set though,

ahh...i see rare and unobtainable....theres 1 on amazon for nearly $300, and all the 'free' downloads look very dodgy..

anyway, thanks for your response. i hope you are getting on well with help me...i haven't managed to get a taste for jimmy reed as a performer yet...i appreciate his songs though...
