Hey David,

I’m on Level 3, Accomp Study 3 - chords, and confused about the difference between the blues scale and the blues notes.

For example, in the PDF, example 2.5, on one of the bars you use following notes for the IV chord for second position :

6+ 5+ 4+ 3+  ( C E G C)

I understand how these notes are all notes for the C-chord (CEG). What I don’t understand is that the blues scale is this:

3+ 3‘ 4+ 4’ 4 5 6+

I noticed thar 5+ is the not on the blues scale. So what I am confused about is, how is it possible that blues notes being used in the example are not on the blues scale and work for the blues? I just assumed the blues scale contained all the notes of the blues.

Perhaps the blues scale will be explained in a later lesson?

Hello Rishió. Yes, the blues

Hello Rishió. Yes, the blues scale is covered in multiple future lessons. The blues scale is constructed form the most common notes used in blues, over the entire range of the 12 Bar Blues Progression. In other words, you can use that G Blues Scale you mentioned over all of the chords and it works. In addition, you can also use the E on the IV Chord and F# on the V Chord... these are notes that specifically work when over those chords.

It’s exciting that I can understand this now, albeit I have to think for like 10 seconds which is my new annoyance :)

Thanks for the response. I like how things are coming together.
