David,

What would you say to the band when performing "Blues in the Dark" at a jam, or other situation where there's no rehearshal? Let's assume good musicians.  Shuffle, ii V I, what else?  I'm worried about the opening mostly.

Thanks,

Steve

Answer

Hey Steve. I would just say swing. The challenge with this tune is the opening. You have the 1 2 3 4 pickup and then the 7 triplets on the 5 draw, then again the same thing and the band does the IV Chord (quick change), then again back to the I Chord... all leading into the IV Chord in Bar 5. I recommend you singe the first four bars to them while hitting your leg with the hits they'll be playing... signaling the chord with your free hand. It sound difficult, but it works :-)
