I don't think I've ever really understood the pull technique on blow notes. For example, leading into and the 4th chorus of Gary's Blues. The (3+2+1+ pull) __ (3+)__ (3+2+1+ pull) combination.

On a draw pull the tongue covers the holes and pulls off sounding the chord. On a blow pull is a chord sounded and then quickly cut-off by the tongue landing and covering all holes of the chord?

Thanks in advance, Pete

Answer

Hey Pete. It's the same technique for the blow as the draw... just as you described it for the draw... no change. If you're having trouble with this, think "spitty"... like you're try to spit something off the tip of your tongue.

I get it

that's perfect. I get it now. I'm sure I wouldn't have figured it out without "like you're trying to spit something off the tip of your tongue". Interesting when you try the spit movement the tongue ends up off the harp and inside the mouth which is, as you said, just like the draw pull.

Might help others to know you can practice this without the harp first, and then about a half-inch away from the harp. I also found the lips have to be looser on the harp on the blow or I stall out the reeds.
