Hi David,

I'm getting Temperature down pretty well, just practicing it every day to work out all the bugs. I've moved on to Feelin' for the Blues so that I can start working on bending simultaneously. I'm guessing that the ' on the notes means bend down a half step and the '' means bend down a whole step. Am I correct? For example on Ex 1.1 of Bending Study 2, I should be bending my A Harmonica 2 draw down to D NOT D# correct?

In addition on, on the first chorus of Feelin' for the Blues, I should bend the 3 draw down to G in the first bar and down to F# in the 3rd bar?

I can bend a bit now but I'm using my Tuner to see where I'm at and where I'm supposed to be.

Thank you,
Taylor

PS, good luck on the black belt test. What martial art(s) do you do?

Answer

Yes, each slash represents a half step bend. On a tuner you'll see the 3 draw as G# on an A Harmonica. G is the half step bend and F# is the whole step bend.

Thanks... it's a mixture of arts, but the classic part of the art is TKD. Off now to kick some butt... well, actually heads :-)

3 draw bend

David,

I've had my tuner out the past few days working on bending. I can get the 6 and 5 down pretty nicely. The 4 is getting there slowly but surely. I can even get the whole step on 3 draw without a lot of trouble but I'm having quite a bit of difficulty getting that half step. I can get the half step briefly when I do the "KeeAww" dip, but to be able to bring it down and hold it to a half step is what's turning my hair grey. Any tips or suggestions that could help? Besides hair dye.

Answer

The control of your 3' is found with the middle front of the tongue. The 6' position is actually very close to the same position. Work the 6 bend for a bit and then go to the 3 and work that a bit... use the same smaller embouchure to control the 3. Also look at the FAQ section on "My 3' draw goes right to the bottom (can’t get the whole step bend)!" This is relative to the 3' as well. Good luck and take your time... it's a bitch to control... you'll get it though... slow and steady.
