Hi. I am doing LOA3 and started trying to do the bends. On hole 2 and 3 I am able to get the correct note (almost) for a first step bend but it sounds choked and at half volume with horrible tone,  as if the bend is caused by me 'squeezing' the hole.  Any tips?

Answer

Good morning Dave Blue. My main advice is to watch my bending lesson videos often throughout your learning process. Every time you watch them you'll pick up on something new that you weren't capable of understanding the previous watching. Bending is a process over time... experimentation and time are the key elements. What you described is normal in the learning process, except for the squeezing of the lips. Your goal is to keep your lips relaxed, just like you do when playing normal techniques on the harmonica. Focus on moving only your tongue for bending. Best wishes on this, and work on other material (like Solo Harmonica Studies, which don't use bending) while you develop this skill.
