Hello David.

Wow, there is a ton of material in Level 4; gonna take the rest of this year to process it all.

My query is in regard to playing pulls on some notes; not sure whether to draw or blow the pulls after some notes.

For example, in Solo 2 Section 2 Bass Lines, Ex 2.1, meas 1-4, there is a draw pull after 5+,

while in meas 1-4 of Ex 2.2, there is a blow pull after 5+; sounds good in both cases.

Then in meas 6, there is a draw pull following 7+. To my ear a blow pull sounds much better.

I know if the pulls are performed softly enough, the tonal quality is minimized, so it shouldn't matter too much what is played on the pulls, so long as the rhythm is maintained. Also, in some cases, it is just easier to do a draw pull while in others the blow pull is easier.

What do you think? Do you address this in any of the lessons, or do some of the contributers have some input?

Thanks.

Hank

Hello Hank. The rule of thumb

Hello Hank. The rule of thumb is if you're between draw downbeat notes, do a draw pull. If you're between blow downbeat notes, do a blow pull. When it is mixed, you choose which one feels more comfortable, or sounds better, to you. You're correct that a pull is more of a rhythmic device than a harmonic one.

2 draw vs 3 blow, lungs full .....

Hello David, more on breathing, choice of 2 draw or 3 blow, tongue pulls, etc.

While playing meas 1-4 of Ex 2.2 of Solo 2 Section 2 Bass Lines, I find myself filling up with air. I have tried expelling as much air as possible while blowing 5+ at the end of each measure, but find it is not enough. Then I found myself quite naturally, without thought, playing 3 blow at the beginning of the measure followed by a light blow pull. It was easy and took care if the full lungs issue. And it sounds good to my ear.

I will record myself doing it both ways, 2 draw or 3 blow and see if I can detect any noticeable difference.

Hello Hank. That's a valid substitution.

P.S., if you play softly and make sure that your nose is closed for the draw notes, you'll be able to play that passage as written.

Thanks for the feedback David. I need to do the section on "Breathing". I still don't really know if my nose is closed when drawing notes; I suspect that it is not and that it why I am filling up so quickly. So much to figure out here ....
