Hi there, I think of buying a Fireballmic. Now there are two models on the market, same price. The Fireball V has a volume control. Has anyone experience using them or can help me which to choose?

Hello Kai, I purchased the

Hello Kai, I purchased the first gen of the Fireball w/volume. It's ok, but the Ultra58 (Utlra 57) from BlowsMeAway production has more sonic range--making it the choice of professional gigging chromatic players, like the late great Toots Thielman.

Thanks a lot Kinya. I think

Thanks a lot Kinya. I think of this. I thought of getting one because the Green Bullet i own is not really comfortable in my opinion (too heavy and if you're sweating just a litte bit i slips away without tape around). The clean sound of the fireball an the high output level are responsible for my choice until now. As I do not own a high-end amp and mostly play through my studiomonitors I can adjust my distortion and sound with software-emulations that really do a great job in te end.

But I see the point - the ultra is the better choice in the long run I guess.

Best Regards - Kai

Comfort and sound equipment

Comfort and sound equipment are huge considerations. What is your primary axe, the Diatonic or Chromatic harmonica?

Hello Kai, the Audix Fireball

Hello Kai, the Audix Fireball and Ultra58 (SM58) are preferred when "clean" expression of the harmonica is the goal. If electric blues is your favorite type of diatonic harmonica sound, consider ...

The SM57 (Ultra57) although it shares the same Unidyne III cartridge as the Shure SM58 (Ultra58), the shape of the SM58 ball grill keeps you a little further away from the diaphram of the cartridge--for that clean sound. The SM57 has a completely different grill, allowing players to bring the harmonica closer to the cartridge and produce a fatter "in your face" sound. Listen to Paul Butterfield Live, "Everything is Going to be Alright".

The SM57 works well with both solid state and tube amplifiers, my preference when playing directly through a solid state system (i.e. PA, Bose L1, S1) is the Ultra57 (SM57). When playing through a good tube amp, I prefer the Bulletini--an extremely comfortable microphone manufactured by, blowsmeaway Productions/Greg Heuman.

*Interesting factoid: Shure used the designation SM to identify it's original line of "Studio Microphones"
