Hi David,
when you applying the 5 type of chorus forms during improvisation,
you choose the chorus form before play it or during a lick and choose where to go in the moment?

thanks

Best Regards

Answer

That's correct, it's not chosen ahead of time. At the end of your first lick you first decide whether to repeat it (if it's a two measure lick or shorter) leave space, or thrown in a fill... these are your options. You then decide if the lick was a good one and if you should repeat it (we want to repeat it). At the end of the second line you again "yes" or "no," "Yes," repeat, or "No," go away. If you repeat you get AAA, if you don't it's AAB. A B/A C is also an option of course. So, yes, it's a decision made as you play.
