Amp Feedback
I've got a custom amp that was built based on the Fender Princeton circuit and swapped out the 12ax7's in v1 and v2 for a 12ay7 in v1 and a 5751 in v2 in order to reduce the gain that was causing a ton of feedback at volume setting just about 3. That seemed to work because I could get the volume setting to about 6 without any feedback. Using a bullet mic with a shure element (similar to the Huemann elements) but when I took the amp to a jam I was still getting some feedback at moderately decent setting of 4 with control knob on the mic at about 1/4.
Amp was set on the floor and the space was fairly tight so there might have been an issue with sound bounceback to the amp and tight quarters.
How do other folks adjust for this?
PS. even at lower settings my harp could be heard above the other instruments, set the treble knob up 1 from normal settings. (Great tip provided by David in a previous tech tip post).
Thanks!
Greg
what's your thoughts on the squeal killer? I borrowed one from Tony Holiday and used it for a couple of hours. It helped with my modified VHT Special 6 (5w). I just purchased a Harpgear 35, can't wait to try it out. I have heard the kinder AFB and the squeal killer work better on larger amps to help with headroom. I will probably get one. I did notice it drops the volume a little compared to the kinder AFB. they both about the same increase of headroom though. I would like to do a side by side comparison on a larger amp to see which one I like better.
With my 5 watt amp, It's hard to play on a small stage without getting feedback. I even dropped down from a 12ax7 to a 5751 tube, which helped. I do have to crank it up more due to the smaller amp size which doesn't help. I have a Greg Heumann wood mic with the cm element, so it's a hot mic as it is. I am hoping I won't have as many feedback issues with the HG35.
So nobody's got anything to offer? Am I just off my gourd?
