I have a Special 20 in the Key of A.  It is 7 months old.  The two hole draw no longer makes any sound.  A few days ago I noticed it would not sound when I first started playing, but after 5 or 10 minutes it would be fine.  Now it doesn't sound at all.  The 2 hole blow is working fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Open the covers and check it

Unbolt the covers and check the reed. The draw reeds are mounted on the outside of the reedplate, making them easy to get at. Draw 2 will be the second one in from the left, and the second-largest reed in the row.

  1. Check for any visible debris that might have lodged between the edge of the reed and its slot in the reedplate below. if you see aything don't pull on it. Instead, slide it out toward the tip of the reed to remove it.
  2. Check the gap. the tip of the reed should rest above the reedplate by at least the thcikness of the reed tip, but for that reed more like 2 to 3 times the thickness of the tip. More on that, but first:
  3. Lift the tip of the reed with your fingernail or the edge of something thin and stiff like a knife blade, then let it vibrate.-- If it sounds normally, that's good.-- If it just dives into the slot and doesn't spring back, or sounds a lower note than it should, the reed is fatigued and about the break.
  4. If the gap appears too low, try plinking the reed (lieft and release so that it vibrates) to see how it behaves. If it sounds normally, then follow the next to steps.
  5. Plink the reed 100 times. This stress test wil determine whether the reed is about to fail. If it's going to fail (break) it will likely do so during the 100-plink test.
  6. If the reed survives the 100-plink test, try raising the gap, by securing the base of the reed by pressing a thumb on itwhile you flex the tip upward. Do this gently, stopping frequently to let the reed settle by plinking a few times, then testing the playing response. Once you get the response where you want it, you may have to tune the reed a little, as pitch can change while gapping.

two hole draw is now working

Hi Winslow,

Thanks for your detailed reply.  I followed your instructions and now the 2 hole draw works once again.  I plinked it 100 times and set the gap and then it worked.

I appreciate your help.

problem is back

Hi Winslow,

Apparently I was too quick to declare victory.  I was playing today and after 20 minutes the 2 hole draw stopped working again.  Is there hope?  Should I re-do the repair process?

Thanks
