Good evening O Sensei,

As i work on LOA 5 and practice the Bending Study 4 exercises i have come to realize that i can bend the 2" in two different ways regarding the positioning of my tongue. moving from the half step to the whole step my tongue moves back a little to hit the whole step. That's when i realized i have been hitting that whole step with a slight different position of the tongue during normal playing. My tongue in this position (the 2nd way) is dropped further and the whole step bend location seems to be futher back than the "koo" position. in both positions i am hitting the D on an A harp using a tuner but this last way is easier, sounds better and i can go beyond the D. Im thinking the last way is the best due to the sound of the note (sounds pure, less strain/air) but is it the correct way? how can the mouth tune to the same note in two somewhat different ways?

Ooos,

Mark

Answer

Hello Mark. In both cases your tongue is moving in a way that enlarges the front chamber of your mouth, this is why they both produce a bend. Go for the way that gives you the best sound... I don't see any issues with what you explained... they are both ways I will give tips to students.
