Some cool things about this

Some cool things about this:

  • He's using the mid-low register, which doesn't always get a lot of play on chromatic. And he makes it sound beefy and muscular - acoustically. Ross tells me that his chief concern was being in a lower range than the whistler. But regardless of the reason, he makes it sound good.
  • He can use a lot of splits and chords duing the part of the song that's in C, and the chord progression allows him to use slide-in chords that slide down a semitone when you let the slide out.
  • The song modulates away during the bridge from C to Ab, where Ross takes the melody. That may sound like a hard key, but it's a lot like playing in G with the slide held in - 8th position, but it plays a lot like second.
